Spring Wanderings

The April Showers have definitely started up this weekend, as Michigan got its fair share of thunderstorms. Actually, I enjoyed the sound of the thunder falling asleep last night. As for this weekend, I spent some time outdoors and wandered out towards the side of the island that I don’t get into much, finding myself in some kind of miniature adventure.

On Saturday, I headed to St. Ignace to drive my car around and buy some groceries. It was sunny at the time and I took the opportunity to catch a photo of the bay and the lighthouse passage:

And on Sunday, biked out on the North end of the island, out past Arch Rock and mile marker 2 to reach Lake Shore Nature Trail. It’s a short trail, but such a cute little pocket of Mackinac. There’s even a wooden walkway that splits into two directions to make it more exciting, plus lots of trail markers to tell you about the surrounding nature. I highly recommend a stop here if you ever find yourself biking around the island!

I hope you’re all enjoying Spring in your own hometowns! Here’s to counting down the days to summer!

A Mackinac Island Winter

Have I really gone three months without blogging?

Yes. Yes, I have.

This winter hasn’t been anything extreme in any way to me. We didn’t get dumped with an amazing amount of snow, it didn’t really get too cold, nothing out of the ordinary happened… I guess I just ended up spending a lot of time enjoying Mackinac Island on my own. I find that I can get too cynical when I hear others say how in love they are with the island, how magical it is, how blessed they are. I’ve gotten too caught up in work and stress that I wouldn’t allow myself to enjoy the fact that all of statements above are completely true for me, too.

So instead, I just tried to spend a little more time offline, focused more on photography, and tried to find the best about Mackinac Island and why it makes me feel blessed. I took a lot of great photos… and personally, I made sure to spend some of that time focusing on my health, enjoying the outdoors, finding more passion in my work, spending time with great company, and just living.

Now that’s not to say that I haven’t been posting any pictures online… they just haven’t been on my blog, and I’ve been uploading island photos on my Instagram account, @heathermay.xo (you might notice those pictures in the sidebar).

Anyway, now that we’re in the month of April and all of the snow is gone, I decided not to let the remainder of my winter photos go to waste and will post them below.

Below you will find winter photos from January through March of this year.

Please enjoy 🙂

Mackinac in November

What a great time to be outside!

November up here on Mackinac Island has been fairly good to us so far. The weather seems much warmer than in past years, which has been great! It makes raking the leaves in my front yard all the more merry, and I hope the nice weather keeps up for a few more days because I’m still not done raking…

One of the nice things about this time of year is that the sunsets seem to become more interesting. I’m not sure why, but the skies just end up producing much more pink and purple colors that make it seem so unique, especially over our beautiful Lake Huron. In the summer, whenever I close the shops for the night, I would always take the long way home and ride my bike through downtown and around the boardwalk, just so that I could catch that sunset… it never failed to relax me after an especially long workday. But now that the sun sets much earlier (around 5pm-ish), I try to get outdoors early enough to catch it.

Im trying to enjoy this wonderful weather before this snow starts up, which apparently is happening this Saturday…

On Saturday, we received our first dusting of snow. I was really looking forward to it, but unfortunately it didn’t seem like we got that much on Saturday. I could be speaking too soon on this though… maybe we’ll get more snow overnight? Maybe it’ll snow all day Sunday!? Hopefully it will, as I’m absolutely ready for some colder weather and plenty of beautiful snowfall… we’ll see!

*UPDATE* Woke up to much more snow! It might all melt today, but still, it’s nice waking up to the first winter wonderland of the winter season!
