Slow Open

Congratulations everyone, we made it through May!

The weather is steadily getting nicer, the flowers are steadily blooming, and stores are slowly starting to open. The island has participated in a “soft soft opening” to the season, keeping the elders of our community in mind as we get the tourist season started up. I’ve ventured out a few times recently for more than just the mail, and am starting to enjoy more of the nature coming alive outside my window as well.

Two morning doves have found a new place to build a nest, just outside my window! They were working on it for a full day a few days ago, using the cut off branch as a nice landing pad.

A shipment of flowers rounding the corner onto Cadotte Ave…

My sister arrived back on the island a couple weeks ago as well. The boat lines have made many changes to their services in the time of Covid-19, including requiring guests wear masks on the boat, and cleaning seats off between each boat ride.

I recently left the island to move my car out of winter parking and into summer parking, as well as pick up my resident pass for Shepler’s. The ride was great, and I missed the wavy rides of a fast ferry ride! I haven’t left the island since mid-March, which isn’t that long, but considering the fact that I’ve stayed home for the majority of that time, it seemed MUCH longer. Anyway, it was nice to enjoy the lake breeze on the return trip home.

For those of you interested, you can find a list of store openings on Mackinac Island’s tourism bureau website, right here. Who’s looking forward to a trip to the island this summer, and when are you planning to come? Is there anyone playing it safe and delaying their trip to next year?

Stay safe everyone! Until next time…

November Holidays

Well, that didn’t last long!

Last week we had a brief glimpse of hope for some snow here on Mackinac Island, but it has all since melted… instead, the pretty soft snow has been replaced with wet gross rain. I wouldn’t mind it so much if it were warmer… actually, it is warmer than it was last week, so I guess that’s a plus.

This week I’ve had Thanksgiving Break from work, as I’m sure many teachers are enjoying everywhere! It has been mostly uneventful. My brother wasn’t free this week, so we actually celebrated a week earlier. It was great (especially with the snow), and I made a somewhat successful cornbread stuffing from scratch this time around. I’m realizing now how fun it is to make food from scratch instead of the box. It’s definitely my goal to do more of that this winter. I decided to start a new blog just to share recipes that I’ve tried, and hopefully this will also include lots of recipes that I’ll create in the future, too!

Anyway, with all this extra time on my hands I did wander around the island a little bit.

Some pictures of the recent switch from Arnold line to Starline. They are partway through the painting process:

Many people left the island for their Thanksgiving break. I opted for a Staycation…

The Christmas tree is also up but man, we really could use more snow!!

More scenes from near the water’s edge:

The snowmobile signs have been posted. All we need now? Yep….. Snow!!!

I also made my way down towards Devil’s Kitchen. In September I’d come down here after work sometimes to just sit and read a book and enjoy a little fresh air…

I’m looking forward to the upcoming Christmas bazaar and to really getting into the holiday spirit. Have a great week, everyone!

Mackinac in November

What a great time to be outside!

November up here on Mackinac Island has been fairly good to us so far. The weather seems much warmer than in past years, which has been great! It makes raking the leaves in my front yard all the more merry, and I hope the nice weather keeps up for a few more days because I’m still not done raking…

One of the nice things about this time of year is that the sunsets seem to become more interesting. I’m not sure why, but the skies just end up producing much more pink and purple colors that make it seem so unique, especially over our beautiful Lake Huron. In the summer, whenever I close the shops for the night, I would always take the long way home and ride my bike through downtown and around the boardwalk, just so that I could catch that sunset… it never failed to relax me after an especially long workday. But now that the sun sets much earlier (around 5pm-ish), I try to get outdoors early enough to catch it.

Im trying to enjoy this wonderful weather before this snow starts up, which apparently is happening this Saturday…

On Saturday, we received our first dusting of snow. I was really looking forward to it, but unfortunately it didn’t seem like we got that much on Saturday. I could be speaking too soon on this though… maybe we’ll get more snow overnight? Maybe it’ll snow all day Sunday!? Hopefully it will, as I’m absolutely ready for some colder weather and plenty of beautiful snowfall… we’ll see!

*UPDATE* Woke up to much more snow! It might all melt today, but still, it’s nice waking up to the first winter wonderland of the winter season!
